The example given was note to self: Call Larry and tell him that you need his help and tools on Wednesday. I didn't pay attention to the number I was dialing and the person on the other end said ' you've got the wrong number'. We talked about Wednesday coming around and no Larry, no help, no tools because I didn't actually make contact with the person I was trying to reach. Prayer is similiar in that we are communicating with a specific person, Heavenly Father.
So we laid down some guidelines: Address Heavenly Father, Express Yourself- gratitude, pour out your heart, sincere conversation, Ask for what you need/desire, Listen with real intent (meaning you will act on what you hear or what the Holy Spirit reveals, and Close in the name of Jesus Christ. This is just a guide and not a script.
We wrote in our journals a prayer plan that includes where and when we will pray individually and with family.
We discussed Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you; and 3 Nephi 18:19 Therefore ye must always pray unto the Father in my name;
We can talk to Heavenly Father about real things going in our lives, we can pray for others, ask for guidance, peace, protection, safety, comfort, express gratitude for blessings received, and always believe that we receive what we've asked for. Heavenly Father loves you and prayer is an invitation.
We defined sincerity as "I mean what I say." And real intent as "I will do what I'm told".
The example given: Which is more valuable to me, calling my spouse who is out of town when I break down on the side of the road or the stranger who immediately stops to help me and get me back on the road again?
We introduced the Godhead- Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost as three separate beings with one purpose.
We received our journals, discussed the purpose, and wrote in them. Today's invitation was to pay attention to the Spirit you felt and write down what the Holy Ghost prompted you to do. The assignment is to follow The Spirit and do that thing.
We discussed ALMA 7:11-12 and defined succor as help and strength in our difficulties.
We discussed how we are spirits with a body (mortal experience). Death separates our spirit from our body. Only Christ can reunite the body and the spirit permanently (immortal-never to separate again) through His Resurrection. (hand in glove object lesson)
Christ's Resurrection is the final event of the atonement. It means He conqured death and He lives again. So can we!
